Communication of people with mental retardation

This is a current project.

Description

This multi-investigator project is a joint effort by investigators at the University of Kansas and University of Washington. Disordered or delayed communication and language development are a defining characteristic of mental retardation. Researchers believe there are “cusps” in communication and language development — an intersection in the interaction of behavior, skill, perception or motivation that is crucial to what should come next in development. Until the cusp is negotiated, development along a particular route may stop. This project hopes to show that infants, children and adults with, or at risk for, severe impairments can learn intervention strategies to negotiate specific language-development cusps.
