Preventing child neglect in high-risk mothers
This is a current project.
Description
This project, awarded to the University of Notre Dame, is working to reduce the incidence of child neglect and abuse in high-risk mothers by helping them understand new models of parenting and adapt new parenting styles and practices. Four hundred high-risk mothers are participating in the project at four subcontracted sites, including the University of Kansas. High-risk mothers come from two demographic groups: first-time mothers ages 15-18 and mothers ages 22 to 35 who do not have a high school diploma. The overall goal is to develop more sensitive and responsive parents who are aware of the importance of in-home enrichments and the role they, as mothers, can play in helping children achieve important developmental milestones.
