Research Design and Analysis
The Research Design and Analysis (RDA) Unit provides collaborative services and resources for proposal development, data analysis, data management, and graphical design with the goal of enhancing the validity, rigor, and impact of LSI research.

The RDA unit employs four PhD statisticians to assist in research proposal development, including guidance on hypothesis development, study design, sample size determination, appropriate measurement techniques, and data analysis planning. These scientists also can assist researchers in conducting advanced statistical analyses and disseminating the results of these analyses. Our quantitative scientists include:
Dr. Kandace Fleming (100% FTE; email; CV) received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Research from the University of Kansas in 1998 and has been a member of the RDA since 1998. As Associate Scientist and General Director, Dr. Fleming is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the RDA Unit. She has expertise in multilevel and longitudinal analyses, single-subject and small sample statistical techniques, measurement, and instrument development. She is fluent in SPSS, SAS, and Mplus. She has served as Co-PI, Co-I, or consultant as a quantitative methodologist on numerous funded projects from NIH and IES in the areas of communication, educational interventions, and individuals with disabilities.
Dr. Lesa Hoffman (50% FTE; email; CV; webpage) received her Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Kansas in 2003. In Fall 2014 Dr. Hoffman joined the RDA as Associate Scientist and as Associate Professor of Quantitative Methods in the LSI. Her program of research seeks to empirically examine and to thoughtfully disseminate how developments in quantitative psychology can best be utilized to advance empirical work in psychology, human development, and other social sciences. She has expertise in multilevel and longitudinal analyses, generalized linear models, and latent variable models (e.g., CFA, IRT, DCM, and SEM). She is fluent in SPSS, SAS, STATA, and Mplus. She has received support from NIH and NSF as a PI, Co-I, and methodological consultant and is the sole author of a 2015 textbook on longitudinal models.
Dr. Rebecca E. Swinburne Romine (100% FTE; email; CV) received her PhD in Quantitative Methods in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 2011 and joined the RDA as an Assistant Research Professor in October 2012. Dr. Swinburne Romine has expertise in a variety of statistical models including multilevel models, logistic regression, confirmatory factor analysis, Cox regression, and profile analysis. She is fluent in SPSS, is gaining fluency in Mplus and SAS, and is familiar with AM for complex sampling, Lisrel, and AMOS. She has served as Co-I or consultant as a quantitative methodologist on numerous funded projects from NIH, CDC, DOE, and OJJDP in the areas of communication, behavioral interventions, and at-risk youth.
Dr. Tyler Hicks (50% FTE; email; CV) received his Ph.D. in Education at the University of South Florida in 2015, with a concentration in Quantitative Methods. In 2018, he joined the RDA as an Associate Researcher in LSI. His program of research seeks to test and publicize developments in modern Bayesian modeling that enhance the meaning of statistical inferences. He has interests in Bayesian modeling, measurement theory, and experimental design. He is also fluent in SAS and, on occasion, he dabbles in R and Mplus. He has experience in grant development, especially for IES, and methodological consulting. He has disseminated his technical work in outlets, such as Educational Researcher, American Journal of Evaluation, and the SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation.
Data Management Services:
The RDA unit’s database manager is Lisa Hallberg (100% FTE; email). Lisa joined RDA in 2010 and has over 15 years' experience in database application development, both in academia and the public sector. She has extensive experience in web application development, including server configuration and administration, database management, application architecture and user interface design for desktop, web and mobile devices. In her role as database manager she develops customized data collection and retrieval methodology for novel or existing instruments, including web-based forms, paper forms that use optical capture software to input data, and programs to validate data accuracy, automate scoring, and extract data.
In addition, the RDA also provides secure data storage by hosting and managing a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted, secure web server for online data collection and a HIPAA-compliant database server for data storage. RDA’s servers are securely housed in the University of Kansas’ central IT Services, including redundant backups, both physical and firewall-based security, regular security audits, and disaster recovery plans.
By assisting with project management, Lisa and the RDA team will seek to find a data management solution that fits within each projects’ time and budget constraints. Online data collection and management options include both custom web development and direct data maintenance, as well as REDCap, a sophisticated software package designed and developed collaboratively by researchers at Vanderbilt University (https://projectredcap.org) and other research institutions around the world. REDCap offers research teams a web-based interface for development of data collection instruments and participant management systems, without any computer coding.
Graphic Design Services:
The RDA unit’s graphic designer is Chris Lorenzen (100% FTE; email). Before joining the RDA in 1998, Chris previously served as graphics editor for several small-town newspapers. Chris now works with LSI researchers to design and print over 200 conference posters every year in either traditional paper foramt or on cloth (for easier transport and greater durability). He also helps LSI personnel develop a broad range of marketing materials including logos, brochures, flyers, annual reports, and PowerPoint presentations. Chris is also available to help train or offer guidance in many of the common software packages related to graphic design, including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat, as well as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Visio.
