Our country devalues the gifts of old age. So why get old?

I received my Medicare card in the mail the same day I came down with the flu.
These were timely and unwelcome reminders of mortality, the fragility of life and the great abyss of aging that lies ahead.
Not a pretty picture.

I also got an email from Gerontological Society of America seeking scientific papers on the theme "The Purposes of Longer Lives."
